Creative Zen Neeon 5GB Review

Introduction

Enough has been said about Creative being slow. The Zen Micro came out nearly a year after the iPod mini. A Creative digital audio player with a colour screen is nowhere to be seen, despite competitors releasing players with colour screens. FM tuner and recording is nice, but it lacked line-in encoding for higher quality recordings. Also, the design and software tended to appeal more to the techies. Well, no more, according to Creative.

Creative Zen Neeon Media Reception

Once again, we were invited to yet another Creative media event on 25 May. This time, it was all about the new Zen Neeon. The usual marketing hype follows.

- 5GB capacity
- Highly personalised player, with 7 different coloured-LED backlights, 10 brushed-metal backplate colours, and a variety of Stik-On skins
- Classy black-piano finish
- Direct line-in recording
- FM tuner and recording
- Voice recording
- 4 EQ presets and 1 custom EQ
- Up to 18 hours battery life

With the wide range and possibilities of personalisation, the Zen Neeon is targeted mainly to the female market. It is the smallest and lightest hard-disk-based player. It supports up to 100 hours of voice recording, and can use an external microphone for better quality.

The Zen Neeon also has a bunch of accessories, including a wired remote, AC power adapter, wireless bluetooth headphones, matching coloured speakers and earphones as well as the various Stik-Ons.

Hi, newbie says hi!

Sorry, I know this post hasn't been read for two months but I really need to know about the Zen Neeon 2GB...I'm going to buy this because it's got longer battery life and I don't desperately need 5GB...question is: how much of the review is compatible with 2GB?

The most important thing on Earth for me is not needing to bother with libraries and itunes...

I'm probably being very stupid here cos I really never check on any mp3 player until now...

Thanks for your patience!

The 2GB Neeon is actually a newer version of the player, which comes 512MB and 1GB capacities as well. The new Neeons are flash-based player (vs. the micro-hard disk 5GB Neeon).

Main differences are that it is lighter (55 vs 75g), has 2-colour OLED screen (vs monochrome LCD), longer battery life (32 vs 16h), and limited colours (purple for 512MB, blue for 1GB and grey for 2GB).

Other than that, the review of the 5GB version should also apply to the new Neeons.

Two bumps in a row. Sorry about that...but I too thought I'd inquire about the NEEON.  I'm just starting to dabble into the world of MP3 players, not having owned one yet- so I'm looking for a solid 'first MP3 player'.

Stumbling on the NEEON, I thought it fit the bill completely...though when finding reviews, the majority of negative responses really has scared me away from purchasing the device. I just want to make sure I spend 100+ dollars on something that won't wind up being a big head-ache, and as a college student...100-something dollars is something that needs to be well spent.

Mainly the laggy issues have me scared.  I've heard the player takes forever between songs and to load.  Additionally I've read some reports of the player just up and breaking...needing to be reset in order to work again.

Likewise...I've heard that official updates since it's launch have helped quell some of these issues...but really I just want to be sure.

Is the NEEON better now thanks to time; or would I be better off with something else?  I just want something simple, but sleek.  1-5 GB sounds about right as well.

Again, sorry for the bump.  Thanks for the help!
